Ubisoft Delays Assassin’s Creed Shadows to 2025

Ubisoft Delays Assassin’s Creed Shadows to 2025

Ubisoft has delayed the launch of its highly-anticipated game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, from November 12th, 2024, to February 14th, 2025. The company stated that the extra time is needed to "polish and refine the experience," ensuring that the final product meets player expectations.

Marc-Alexis Cote, the game's executive producer, acknowledged the disappointment this may cause but said the decision is in the "best interest of the game."

The delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows also coincides with the announcement of the Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, which will share a similar historical Japanese setting. Both games are expected to launch in 2025, setting up a competitive showdown between the two titles.

Delay follows underwhelming performance of Star Wars Outlaws

The delay comes in the wake of Ubisoft's recent challenges, particularly the underwhelming performance of Star Wars Outlaws. Despite strong early reviews, the game was plagued by bugs and glitches, leading to lower-than-expected sales.

The lessons learned from that release have reportedly influenced the decision to give Assassin’s Creed Shadows more time for development.

The decision to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes at a critical time for Ubisoft, whose share price has fallen sharply following the struggles of Star Wars Outlaws. The delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows will add an estimated €20 million ($22.2 million) to development costs. Investors have expressed concern about Ubisoft’s performance, with a minority investor even calling for the company to be sold or taken private.

Ubisoft's co-founder and CEO, Yves Guillemot, admitted that the firm’s second-quarter performance had "fallen short of expectations," but emphasised the company’s commitment to creating games that resonate with players. He also mentioned that Ubisoft is conducting a strategic review to improve its business model and execution.

Assassins Creed Shadows to be available on Steam at launch

In addition to polishing the game, Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on Steam at launch, unlike Star Wars Outlaws. The game will also break from Ubisoft's typical season pass model, with the first expansion offered for free to anyone who pre-orders the game. Fans who already pre-ordered will receive full refunds
