Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the party after punching a person during a night out with friends. Mike Amesbury represents Runcorn and Helsby in northwest England for Labour Party. He said that he felt threatened and he later contacted the police to report the incident himself.
Details of the Incident
The fight started after Mike was seen on CCTV talking to a passerby. The footage shows Mike throwing the first punch and then hitting the man several times after he was knocked to the ground. In response the Labour Party has suspended Amesbury’s membership while the matter is investigated. He has said he will fully cooperate with police inquiries.
Amesbury’s Statement
In a post on his X account Mike shared a statement:
“Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident. I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police. I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
