The Game Awards 2024 Nominations Announced: Astro Bot and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Lead With 7 Nominations Each

The Game Awards 2024 Nominations Announced: Astro Bot and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Lead With 7 Nominations Each

The Game Awards 2024 nominees have been announced, and this year’s lineup is led by Astro Bot and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, each earning seven nominations, including the prestigious Game of the Year. This annual celebration of gaming will take place on December 12th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking the event’s 10th anniversary. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the ceremony promises to highlight the best in gaming while offering new announcements and trailers.

Competing for the top prize alongside Astro Bot and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth are Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Sony leads the pack as the most-nominated publisher, racking up 16 nominations. Square Enix and Xbox follow with 12 each, and Sega trails close behind with 11.

The nominees were selected by a panel of 130 media outlets and creators, ensuring a diverse representation of gaming excellence.

Frontrunners include Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and Balatro

Among the frontrunners, Astro Bot has captured attention for its nostalgic nod to 30 years of PlayStation history, blending inventive platforming with technical prowess, and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, the second instalment in the highly anticipated trilogy, has wowed fans with its expanded content, though its graphical performance has faced some criticism.

Indie title Balatro is a standout contender, created by solo developer LocalThunk. This card game combines strategy with humour, making history as the first indie game without major publisher backing to compete for Game of the Year.

Fans of Elden Ring are cheering for its DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, which brings hours of new challenges and lore. However, its nomination has sparked debate since it’s an expansion rather than a standalone release, with some saying it shouldn’t have been nominated.

Meanwhile, Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by Chinese mythology, impressed fans with its visuals and action-packed combat, despite receiving mixed critical reviews. Metaphor: ReFantazio by the creators of Persona 5 rounds out the nominees, praised for its rich storytelling and exploration of social themes in a mediaeval fantasy setting.

The Game Awards isn’t just about the trophies—it’s a spectacle for fans. Last year, the show drew a record-breaking 118 million livestream viewers worldwide, solidifying its position as a must-watch event in the gaming calendar.

Whether you’re rooting for a blockbuster or an underdog, this year’s Game Awards promises surprises, celebrations, and plenty of gaming magic.
