FSA Warns Some Imported Dubai-Style Chocolates Bars Pose Allergy Risk in the UK

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning about some imported Dubai-style chocolate products that may not meet British food safety standards, especially for people with allergies. These chocolate bars, which have gained popularity thanks to social media, might lack full ingredient lists or allergen labelling required by UK law. Some could also contain banned additives or colours. The FSA advises shoppers, particularly those with food allergies or intolerances, to stick to trusted UK retailers, as products sold there are more likely to comply with the rules and be safe to eat.

Professor Robin May, the FSA’s chief scientific advisor, said, “The vast majority of food in the UK is safe, but some imported Dubai-style chocolate products don't meet our standards and could be a food safety risk, especially for consumers with allergies.”

Since it’s hard for consumers to tell which products are legally intended for the UK market, the FSA recommends avoiding any Dubai-style chocolates unless the label clearly includes required details such as:

  • the name of the food (eg. milk chocolate with pistachio paste filling),
  • an ingredients list with allergens emphasised,
  • the weight of the product,
  • the best before or use by date,
  • and the name and address of the UK or EU business or importer.

The FSA is currently surveying and sampling these products to understand how widespread the issue is and working with local authorities to remove unsafe items from shelves quickly. They are also collaborating with allergy charities to raise awareness. Anyone concerned about a product they’ve seen or purchased should avoid eating it and report it to their local authority.
