Coldplay Announces New Album "Moon Music" - And The Vinyl Will Be Made Entirely From Plastic Bottles
Coldplay has announced their 10th studio album, "Moon Music," which aims to be their most eco-friendly record yet.
The album, which is due to be released on October 4th 2024, will be the first in the world to be pressed on a 140g EcoRecord LP made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Each vinyl copy will contain plastic from nine bottles, reducing the need to create over 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic and cutting carbon emissions by 85%.
Alongside the vinyl, the album will also be available as an EcoCD, made from 90% recycled plastic. A special "notebook" edition will feature 28 pages of notes, lyrics, and illustrations from Chris Martin's studio notebook, using 70% river plastic from Guatemala.
New Record Continues Coldplay's Commitment to Sustainability
The band has a history of environmental initiatives, having cut the carbon dioxide emissions of their Music Of The Spheres World Tour by 59% compared to their previous tour. Chris Martin, the band's frontman, expressed their commitment to sustainability, hoping their efforts inspire other artists to adopt similar practices.
Coldplay's commitment to sustainability extends beyond their records. They have also planted seven million trees globally, one for each person who attends their concerts.
"Moon Music" Could Be Coldplay's Penultimate Record, Says Chris Martin
"Moon Music" reunites Coldplay with producer Max Martin, known for his work with Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. The album's first single, "feelslikeimfallinginlove," will be released on June 21st.
Coldplay is known for their creative and ambitious projects, and "Moon Music" continues this tradition. The album also includes "One World," a track featuring backing vocals from thousands of fans who contributed via the Coldplay website.
The band has hinted that "Moon Music" could be their penultimate album, with Martin stating in an interview in 2021 that Coldplay's final record will come out in 2025. After that, they plan to focus on touring and possibly collaborative projects.
As vinyl records experience a resurgence, Coldplay's innovative approach to eco-friendly music production sets a new standard in the industry. Their efforts not only highlight the environmental impact of music production but also demonstrate that sustainable practices can coexist with artistic expression.
