Cabaret on Broadway To Close Early Following Billy Porter's Withdrawal From Show Due To Sepsis

Cabaret is closing its Broadway run a month early after Billy Porter, who recently took over as the Emcee, withdrew from the show due to a serious case of sepsis. Producers say doctors expect a full recovery but have advised Porter to rest. The immersive production at the August Wilson Theatre will now end on September 21st, instead of the previously scheduled October 19th.

The decision to shut early comes as the show struggles at the box office, with weekly grosses falling to around $505,000—well below what’s needed to sustain its high running costs. “It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run,” said producer Adam Speers, who praised Porter for bringing “his signature passion and remarkable talent” to the role.

Marty Lauter and David Merino, the show’s alternates for Emcee, will split the role until closing night. Despite a strong start and a legacy of success in London, the Broadway transfer has had a more uneven reception. Still, Speers encouraged fans to “return to the Kit Kat Club one last time.”
