Astro Bot Dominates BAFTA Games Awards
Astro Bot stole the show at this year’s BAFTA Games Awards, picking up five wins including Best Game. The 3D platformer, launched for PlayStation's 30th anniversary, also won awards for animation, game design, audio, and best family game. Director Nicolas Doucet dedicated the top prize to game developers who’ve inspired others, and described the studio’s international team as the key to creating “a kind of universal playfulness.”
British horror Still Wakes the Deep made a strong impression too, winning three awards including best leading and supporting performances. Alec Newman and Karen Dunbar were celebrated for their roles in the eerie 1970s-set game on a Scottish oil rig. Dunbar, thrilled by her first BAFTA win after several nominations, joked, “When they shouted my name, I think I started clapping for someone else!”
Meanwhile, Helldivers II picked up best multiplayer game, and Thank Goodness You're Here! was named Best British Game. The latter, a comedy set in a fictional Yorkshire town, was praised for its unique voice and setting. The night also included a call for better conditions for performers by the Equity union, and legendary composer Yoko Shimomura received the BAFTA Fellowship, reflecting on the many times she’d nearly given up, saying, “If the music I have made has resonated with one person... it was worth it.”
