‘Jumanji: Open World’: First Trailer Flips the Formula as Game Avatars Escape into the Real World

LOS ANGELES — Sony Pictures has unleashed the explosive first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, bringing Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan back together for what is being billed as the final installment of the blockbuster action-comedy trilogy (trailer below).

Directed once again by Jake Kasdan, who spearheaded 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2019's Jumanji: The Next Level, the conclusion to the $1.7 billion franchise is slated to hit UK and international cinemas on Christmas Day 2026.

Rather than pulling unsuspecting teenagers into a tropical jungle console world, Open World completely flips the series' signature premise: this time, the video game breaks free of its hardware, bringing its digital avatars and lethal wildlife directly into modern suburban streets.

Glitching Avatars in New England Streets

Set to Europe’s iconic anthem The Final Countdown, the two-minute teaser opens with original real-world teens Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain), and Bethany (Madison Iseman) gathering at Nora's diner alongside Spencer's grandfather, Eddie (Danny DeVito).

The reunion is interrupted when the console malfunctions, spawning the heroic avatar quartet—Dr Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Franklin "Mouse" Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan)—into the physical world.

However, reality comes with unforeseen glitches. The trailer reveals the avatars stuck in a malfunctioning "demo mode," complete with repeating dialogue loops, exaggerated combat movements, and Johnson's hero character mysteriously speaking in a thick accent.

To make matters worse, stampedes of wild rhinos, ostriches, and prehistoric reptiles escape alongside them, turning quiet New England neighbourhoods into an absolute war zone.

"Our heroes have escaped the perilous jungles of Jumanji before, but this time Jumanji breaks free of its console, unleashing its chaos into our world," reads the official studio synopsis.

Kasdan co-wrote the screenplay with long-time writing partners Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, ensuring the trilogy's core cast and supporting players return for the grand finale:
