A Decade Wait for a ‘Super’ Return: Pixar Slates ‘Incredibles 3’ for Summer 2028

BURBANK, CA — The wait for the Parr family’s return just got a definitive timeline. In his first major act as the newly appointed CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Josh D’Amaro officially added Incredibles 3 to the studio’s theatrical release calendar during a shareholder meeting on Wednesday, March 18.

The third installment of the multi-billion dollar superhero franchise is set to hit theaters on 16th June 2028. The date holds significant symmetry for the series, arriving almost exactly ten years after Incredibles 2 dominated the 2018 summer box office.

New Leadership in the Director’s Chair

While the project was first teased at the 2024 D23 Expo, the latest update confirms a major creative shift. For the first time in the franchise’s history, Brad Bird will not be at the directorial helm. Instead, Pixar veteran Peter Sohn—the visionary behind Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, has been tapped to lead the threequel.

Bird, who wrote and directed both the 2004 original and the 2018 sequel, isn't leaving the "Verse" entirely. He is officially credited as a screenwriter and executive producer, ensuring the sharp wit and family dynamics that define the brand remain intact. Reports suggest Bird’s directorial departure stems from his commitments to the sci-fi noir film Ray Gunn at Skydance.

“Peter [Sohn] has been a part of the Pixar family for decades and was personally championed by Brad for this role,” a Pixar spokesperson stated. “He brings a unique emotional depth that perfectly complements the high-octane action of the Parr family.”

The Road to 2028: A Disney Summer Sweep

The announcement of Incredibles 3 is part of a broader "Summer 2028" strategy outlined by D’Amaro. The superhero epic will be the second half of a massive one-two punch for the studio:

Lilo & Stitch 2 Disney Live-Action May 26, 2028
Incredibles 3 Pixar Animation June 16, 2028

Lilo & Stitch 2, the sequel to the 2025 live-action sensation, will anchor the Memorial Day frame, followed just three weeks later by the return of Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl.

High Stakes and Big Boots to Fill

The pressure on Incredibles 3 to perform is immense. The franchise remains one of Pixar’s most lucrative assets:

  • The 2004 Original: Grossed $631 million and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

  • The 2018 Sequel: Smashed records with a $1.24 billion global haul, currently ranking as one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time.

While plot details are being kept in a "super-secret" vault, the core voice cast, including Craig T. Nelson (Bob), Holly Hunter (Helen), and Samuel L. Jackson (Frozone), is expected to return. Fans are already speculating whether the film will finally feature a significant time-jump, potentially showing Jack-Jack as a powerful teenager or Violet and Dash as young adults.

The "New Disney" Era

The timing of the announcement served as a statement of intent for Josh D’Amaro’s tenure as CEO. By prioritizing proven, high-value "legacy" IP alongside new ventures, D’Amaro signaled a return to the "Disney Gold Standard" of theatrical exclusivity.

“We are building on an extraordinary foundation,” D’Amaro told shareholders. “Stories like The Incredibles aren’t just movies; they are milestones for generations of fans. We’re giving these creators the time they need to make this third chapter truly incredible.”
