ACCRA — The family of groundbreaking British-Ghanaian rapper and executive Sway DaSafo have announced that a traditional one-week memorial observation will be held in Accra, Ghana, to honor the late hip-hop icon following his sudden death at age 44.
The memorial event, scheduled for Saturday 3rd October 2026, will give family, friends, and fans an official opportunity to pay their respects in accordance with Akan customs in his ancestral homeland.
Sway, born Derek Andrew Safo in Hornsey, North London, passed away at his home in Ghana on 17th September, just days after celebrating his 44th birthday. Sway's impact on UK rap culture remains historic. In 2005, he became the first independent, unsigned artist to win a prestigious MOBO Award for Best UK Hip-Hop, beating established international acts.
