Man charged with attempted murder of police officers

Following an attack at a house in Londonderry on Thursday, a second man appeared in court after four police officers were wounded. On Saturday morning, Eoin Carlin, 21, of Collon Lane in Derry, appeared in Dungannon Magistrates' Court. He was arrested after an incident on Thursday in Collon Lane, where police were assaulted with a hunting knife during an arrest attempt. On Saturday, it was alleged that as police arrived to make the arrest, the suspect had pulled the knife with a five-inch blade from behind his back and struck out.

The accused is charged with wounding, unlawful possession of a weapon, assault, and drug offences as well as attempted murder. His solicitor informed the court that his client had been diagnosed with mental disorder. His client had not realised for a large part of the incident that he was dealing with police, according to him. During a police interview, he said he had inquired after the two officers involved were in good health. There was no bail application and he was arrested in jail to appear again in person at the Derry courthouse on December 18th.

Second man charged

On Friday, another man appeared in court on separate charges relating to the same incident. Connlan Boyle, 20, of Rosskeen Park, Derry, was charged with assaulting police officers and a custody detention officer. He has also been accused of spitting at cops and being in possession of a Class B drug. Following the incident on Thursday morning, he was arrested. Mr Boyle, who appeared via video connection, was jailed for breaching bail, according to the court. The deputy district judge ordered him to appear again on December ten days later.
